MSPO Certified Products for the World

Written by Ajeng Jok Wan, MPOCC

On 24th April 2022, one container holding 1,318 pieces of Crescent 20L Pure Vegetable Oil Jerry Can had been exported to Cebu, Philippines. While sales from Malaysia to the Philippines may seem rather routine and unexciting, this shipment actually represents a very significant milestone for MPOCC.

This is the first export shipment of palm oil from Malaysia that had been certified with MSPO and carried the MSPO logo on its product label. MSPO certification ensures that the cultivation and processing of the oil palm products are being carried out sustainably balancing the competing needs of People, Planet, and Prosperity.

MSPO also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development (UNSDG) Goals 2030 such as No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Wellbeing, Gender Equality, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Responsible Consumption, and Production and Life on Land. This very first shipment of MSPO-certified products to an international market gives MPOCC a great sense of achievement in materialising Malaysia’s contribution to the world’s sustainability agenda.

SOURCING FOR SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL IN DUBAI WORLD EXPO 2020

Through dynamic activities during World Expo 2022, Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) had the opportunity to exhibit and discuss the sustainability efforts to highlight the importance of Malaysian palm oil to the global community.

This great feat by MPOCC would not have been possible without the collaboration with Sarawak Oil Palm Berhad (SOPB) and its subsidiaries namely SOP Edibles Oils Sdn Bhd (SOPEO) and SOP Foods Sdn Bhd (SOPF). SOPB operates oil palm plantations including achieving the MSPO certified status, SOPEO processes the CPO into the Crescent Pure Vegetable Oil, and SOPF packages and executes sales of the Crescent Pure Vegetable Oil.

MPOCC is instrumental to the success of this project in assisting to provide MSPO Trace as the platform for the purpose of sustainability tracing. To further understand the market sentiments, with SOPB’s agreement, MPOCC had also included a QR Code link on the product label to receive feedback from the end consumers regarding their perception of the product, MSPO certification, and sustainability as a whole. This would allow MPOCC to make further refinements to the MSPO standards in the future and for it to emerge as a leading beacon for sustainable palm oil.

There is a great sense of excitement and happiness shared by MPOCC and its project partners as Malaysia can now bring MSPO-certified palm oil products to international markets. With persistent efforts, it is hoped that MSPO-certified products will gain recognition in more international markets.

Last but not least, MPOCC would like to thank the project partners namely SOPB and its subsidiaries for their cooperation, hard work, and enthusiasm in seeing the project to fruition.
